Happy 2012 all!

Dev8D AU are organising two workshops this month in collaboration with NeCTAR and ANDS:

March 23 in Melbourne

March 27 in Brisbane

With ANDS’ Research Data Australia now in full swing and NeCTAR’s cloud services up and running, these workshops will feature a series of short talks by representatives on how developers can take advantage of these services and take research data to the cloud!

There’ll be a series of Cloud Dojos (practical training sessions, see http://youtu.be/gav9fLVkZQc) with sessions on how to work with and develop for various data repositories and research tools.

Best of all, these workshops are FREE including lunch and ending with pizza and beer into the night.

Stay tuned for more information, and follow us on twitter: @dev8dAU

P.S. There’ll be an open EVO session with the organisers behind Dev8D AU: Monday 19th March 3pm (Eastern Time). Come shape this and future dev8D AU events:

For those that haven’t tried Evo, it might be worth heading to http://evo.arcs.org.au/evoAU/and creating an account – you can then video conference :)

So the first Dev8D AU was a great success!

Much like it said on the box: Ideas were shared, discussed and demonstrated. Arduinos were laid out and tinkered with. Beers were drank.

What surprised me the most, however is the absolute passion and drive displayed. These are highly motivated ambitious developers who are driven to the search and implementation of big, new, and great ideas in technology. Conversation flowed organically and constructively. These were a room of ‘total’ developers with wide ranging interests and skills outside of pure programming: enthusiasts in bioinformatics, music production and even sustainable farming technology were present.

Here’s a capture of topics discussed that was taken using Etherpad during the day.

We’ll be doing this again – bigger and better – in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks to all participants in what was a very successful outcome for a first event.

Dev8D AU is the first Australian workshop of the UK’s JISC-led Dev8D. It’s a FREE 1-day workshop by developers, for developers. This is a great chance for the eResearch developer community to meet each other, catch up and share ideas and challenges.

Being run by developers, this is more of an ‘unconference’ than a formal conference event. Instead of formal presentations with strict timelines, we’ll have demonstrations and open discussions of fellow developer’s ideas and creations. Beers will be provided and consumed. We’ll have Arduinos (http://www.arduino.cc/) and boxes full of lights, sensors and other components to tinker with and program. The most innovative and interesting creation will win prizes.

This is a chance for developers to compare notes, learn a thing or two and meet other developers in an exciting and often challenging field.
